I'd like to take the time to update our customers are what's happening in the world of pea shellers. Who knew so much could be happening in this arena?

Many of you are familiar with the Taylor Pea Shellers that have been crafted in Moultrie, Georgia for decades. Sadly, in 2020, the owner of Taylor Pea Shellers, Terry Taylor, passed away unexpectedly. Terry was the son of the original owner and designer of this style of pea sheller. After much consideration, Terry's family has declined to continuing making the pea shellers.

Southern Garden Tools is now manufacturing the roller-style, American-made pea shellers that you have come to associate with quality results. These are now made in Alabama and now offer a two-year warranty. To differentiate the pea shellers from the previous generation made in Moultrie, we now call these the Model 675 Version 2 or V2 for short.

We are currently accepting orders for these pea shellers with an approximate three week ship time (as of this writing on April 22, 2021). Head on over to 855Sheller.com and purchase yours today. Your thumbs will thank you later.

For more writings by Amy O'Barr, subscribe to our blog.

Southern Garden Toolshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01982151920172945957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4020869927199391131.post-44858668151039320382018-09-07T10:36:00.000-05:002018-09-07T10:45:40.996-05:00All about Holt's Nut WizardsNow that Labor Day has come and gone, we turn our thoughts to fall and all the joys it brings. This is my favorite season because I love Halloween and pumpkins and all the fun that's to be had at this time of year. Here at Southern Garden Tools, we shift our thoughts from pea shellers and corn creamers to cider press and grinders and nuts! We have a thriving nut business and today, let's discuss our most popular nut products-- the Holt's Nut Wizard.

Now, if you've never seen one of these nut harvesting tools, let's take a look.

Holt's Nut Wizards-- the ultimate nut picker upper-- come in a variety of sizes and we will get to that. But first, the basic components of a nut wizard is the football-shaped basket, the triangle-shaped bale and the wooden handle. The basket is composed of flexible wires that are press-fitted into metal cores on each end. These wires hold firm and do not break away from the ends as you roll over your nuts. The bale simply holds the nut picker upper basket in its grip firmly and screws into the pole. The handles vary in color from blue to yellow to wood depending on the size.

Let's get to sizes. We have nut wizards for all types of nuts/similar size objects including pin acorn, chinquapin, small acorns, pecans, hazel nuts, crab apples, bitternuts, large acorns, English walnuts, spent brass, shotgun shells, golf balls, black walnuts, sweet gumballs, apples, pears and even tennis balls! Don't see your nut need listed? Just contact us for expert advice.

We hear from customers who say-- why can't I buy a Large Nut Wizard for pecans-- that way, I can pick up more? Well, it doesn't quite work that way. The nut rollers are designed specifically for the type of nut listed. If you bought that Large Nut Wizard for pecans, you would find that they may become trapped in the basket for a very short period of time and then fall out because the wires are spaced too far apart to hold in that smaller nut.

There is another accessory that is available for these nut harvesters-- the "emptying tool" or the unloader or as we call them around here, the dumper. The dumper tool costs just $4 when ordering alongside of a Holt's Nut Wizard and they assist in being able to empty the roller basket without touching the nuts (which can be very helpful for nuts like black walnuts-- which have a very icky substance on them!). The dumper is easier to show how to use than explain. Let's look.

The dumper has two "legs" that fit on to a five gallon bucket. Your nut roller basket slides down on the protruding end of the dumper and the wires spread, allowing the collected nuts to dump into the bucket. That simple! A very handy accessory to the nut harvesters.

Nut Wizards are really easy to use. Check out this customer video! You can also check out the instructions right here!

There are imposters... those weasels! But Holt's is the original nut picker upper and is American-made-- simply built to last. You can't say that about those other garden people.

That's the conclusion of our what's what's with Holt's Nut Wizard Picker Uppers. Feel free to comment or email us with any questions. You can own your own nut rollers by shopping right here. Oh-- and enjoy that free shipping!
What is nut season here at Southern Garden Tools? That's when customers begin calling and emailing and ordering items from our full line of nut picker uppers and nut crackers. We sell a wide variety of products to solve your nut needs. Today, let's discuss one of our most popular products-- Bag-A-Nut Harvesters.

First, what is a Bag-A-Nut? Bag-A-Nuts (or BagANuts or Bag A Nuts) are American-made nut rollers that come in a variety of wheel length and "magic finger" spacing to address the needs of families all the way up to businesses. Bag-A-Nuts are quality made and backed by a full year warranty.

The first decision in purchasing a Bag-A-Nut is wheel width. Bag-A-Nuts are available in:

Now that we have explored the different lengths of wheels, let's discuss the next most important decision in purchasing your Bag-A-Nut-- what model do you need to pick up the nuts in your yard?

Many people underestimate this decision but if you choose the wrong model, your nut harvester will not be effective. Let's explore why.

This is a close-up picture of a model that picks up acorns or other nuts sizes 1/4" to 1". The blue "magic fingers" that hold the nuts as they are picked up are spaced closely together to accommodate the small nut size. If you were trying to pick up nuts that are two inches in size, the nuts would have a difficult time wedging between the fingers.

This is a black walnut picker upper. As you can see, if you attempted to pick up acorns with this roller, the acorns would simply roll through the BagANut and back to the ground. Picking the correct model is imperative!

Here is a list of the models to ensure you are choosing the perfect one for your particular nuts:

Pine cones can be annoying and hurtful (maybe like some people you know)! We've sold the Pine Cone Wizard by Holt's Nut Wizard for many years now and truly, it is a best seller for us!

However, it is designed to pick up large pine cones and well, not all pine cones are large! Our recommendation for small pine cones has always been the Large Nut Wizard by Holt's Nut Wizard. This model is perfect for black walnuts, sweet gum balls, magnolia seed heads, apple/pear and small fruits-- basically anything 1" to 4" in size. It does a pretty decent job on small and skinny pine cones too but we have been asking Holt's Nut Wizard to address smaller pine cones-- and they delivered! We now offer the Small Pine Cone Wizard. Check it out.

It is time to address the proverbial elephant in the room when it comes to pea shellers. We've noticed an increase in phone calls asking about a different type of Taylor Pea Sheller. Ladies and Gentlemen-- there is but ONE Taylor Manufacturing and ONE Taylor Little Sheller. And we are the #1 dealer of these. If you've seen overseas companies marketing a pea sheller on a stand as a Taylor Pea Sheller... I'm sorry, but that's simply not an authentic Taylor. So how can you know what's a REAL Taylor and what's not? Well, that's easy!

Buy from a trusted dealer. We are a trusted dealer here at 855Sheller. We are the #1 dealer. We travel weekly to the manufacturer's location and buy Taylor Little Shellers in bulk. We carry a full line of parts for these shellers. We train our staff extensively on Taylors. We offer a full support experience with extended hours for your convenience.

You may be asking yourself, "OK- so I know how to identify authentic Taylor Pea Shellers but why shouldn't I try one of the other ones. Here's why:

They are not American-made. Taylor Pea and Bean Shellers are proudly made in the USA with American labor.

They generally ship FROM China and can take up to a month. Will your peas and beans last a month?

Damaged in shipping? Doesn't work? Just don't like it? How will you return it? How can you receive a refund from overseas? How can you communicate with the seller if you do not speak their language?

Most, if not all, are 220V-- which means it is unlikely to be compatible with your home voltage.

They have very little customer reviews-- and those reviews that do exist are poor.

Does the inauthentic Taylor have adjustable rollers? Safety features? We don't know. The product descriptions are short and explain very little.

We have heard from several customers who now have to RE-INVEST in a pea sheller after a disaster with the knock-off Taylor.

Buy an authentic Taylor Pea Sheller and buy from us. We have Little Shellers IN STOCK and available for shipping today or tomorrow depending on when you place your order. We ship via FedEx for super fast delivery. Still on the fence? No problem. Call us! Ask all the questions you may have! We are hear to help you. 855-743-5537-- hope to hear from you soon!
Customers have long requested a retractable handle for nut wizards but to date, we've only been able to offer them for our smallest models. However, in order to offer our customers their most-requested features, we have found an American-made retractable handle that works great for all sizes of the nut harvesters. Collapsing to just over 2 feet, this aluminum construction extends to four feet. Rust-free with a bi-directional twist-lock system means it is perfect for the different heights in your family. Make nut collecting a family affair! To order your nut wizard with retractable handle (or a retractable handle if you already own a nut wizard), call Amy at 855-743-5537 or email amy@egarden.com! When did it become an American drink?Shouldn't a question like what is apple cider be straightforward? Eh-- not so much! Truly, cider is defined by geographic location. In American English, cider is simply defined at the juice that is pressed from an apple. Crisp, fresh and sweet, apple cider is a staple of what it means to have fall in New England. However, in England (who produces half of all the world's cider), France and Spain, cider is a fermented drink that develops into a alcoholic hard cider. Whenever discussing apple cider-- especially with those who are from other geographical regions than yourself-- it would be wise to define which type of apple cider you are referring to!

Just as a clarification--- when we refer to apple cider, we are not referring to apple cider vinegar.

Did you know that apple cider made from wild apples was depicted in cave art in 8000 BCE? It truly has been a staple for many, many years. In the seventeenth century, the tradition of cider took hold in England. When explorers from English, Spain and France voyaged to the New World, they brought this tradition along and cider was a staple in the thirteen colonies. Ever since, America has enjoyed this fall and winter (and other season thanks to preservation) drink.

We interrupt this discussion on apple cider to bring you the latest news on the PoBoy Pea Sheller. If you are in the dark about this, let's catch you up. The PoBoy Pea Sheller is our newest manufacturing venture (check out our other manufacturing ventures here: Kinetic Kracker, Inertia Nutcracker, Dynamic Nutcracker, Steel Nutcracker II). The PoBoy is a uniquely unoriginal concept. This style of pea sheller-- compact and powered by a mixer-- was actually manufactured some 40 years ago under the name Lady Jo and Magic Fingers. For reasons unknown, this style of pea sheller fell out of production but not because it wasn't well-loved! We are bringing this pea sheller back to life in the same classic design but with improvements!

With the PoBoy Pea Sheller, users will enjoy:

-- The low price point! Currently scheduled for sale at $65 with FREE shipping, it is impossible (we know; we tried!) to find anything NEAR this price range that has the capabilities that the PoBoy has (incidentally, there is only two others near this price point AT ALL-- we've tested both and we've been thoroughly disappointed with both).

-- Adjustable rollers! You read that correctly! This under-$100 pea sheller will have adjustable rollers that will accommodate your small varieties such as purple hull all the way up to your large varieties such as butter beans-- no smashing, no problems!

-- Fast shelling speeds! The PoBoy will shell 4 5-gallon buckets in an hour!

-- Gripit and Ripit Technology-- other pea shellers apply undue pressure to the hull causing damaged peas. The PoBoy Pea Sheller grips the hull and rips it down the seam sending peas in the container below. No squished peas!

-- Safety features! The rollers are shielded in every direction to prevent fingers, hair and clothing hang-ups.

-- Compact-- Comes in a sturdy box that doubles as a storage container during non-use times.

If you are amazed at all the features found in just one small pea sheller priced under $100-- well then, we reached our goal!

Itching to get one now? Hop on over to PoBoy Pea Sheller and fill out the form below. We will be contacting customers very soon to place their order-- which will begin shipping October 1, 2017. Great Christmas present! Great gift for you!

Today is hot enough to cook an egg in my car but that doesn't stop me from dreaming of fall-- leaves falling, sweaters on and fresh apple cider in the glass. Since that isn't quite yet a reality yet, I thought I would conjure up such thoughts by starting a series on Apple Cider and how to make it and the perfect equipment you need to accomplish this time-honored family tradition.

Apples are one of America's favorite fruits but did you know that the US is not the largest producer of apples? The People's Republic of China is but US falls a close second. US crop production continues to rise rise rise. Nearly 300 million bushels are produced in the US every year.

What's a bushel? Great question. Bushels are an imperial dry measurement that typically weighs between 42 and 48 lbs. Check this out:
There are over 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the US (and triple that worldwide) with the Red Delicious coming out as the most popular. Check out these:
These are but a few varieties grown-- each with a distinct flavor! Imagine all the flavors you can create in an apple cider!

Apples are a staple in millions of American homes-- thanks to the pilgrims who first planted apples in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Actually part of the rose family, pilgrims referred to apples as "winter banana" or "melt-in-your-mouths".

Apples are second only to oranges in American's most favored fruit. And 20% of all apples grown are used to make apple cider. In Part 2 of A Pressing Matter, we will explore how to make apple cider-- as it is easier than you think!
I'll see one and think-- whoa. I wish I had written that title (maybe not the whole book but definitely the title!). A handful of my favorite titles: The Things They Carried (by Tim O'Brien), The Fault In Our Stars (by John Green) and I Know this Much Is True (by Wally Lamb-- one of my favorite authors). I guess this obsession started as a child when I came across The Tenth Good Thing About Barney (by Judith Viorst)-- a children's book about coping with the loss of a pet. Isn't that title fantastic?! If you are still with me and wondering about how any of this has to do with pea shellers, I am naming this list in honor of the latter most book-- The 10th Good Thing About the Electric Mr. Pea Sheller.

The varieties of corn is nearly unlimited but they can be categorized
into six basic types. While sweet corn is what lands on our plates for
its sweet, low starch taste, dent corn-- named for the dimple present
on the kernel-- accounts for 99% of US corn production. Bland and
starchy compared sweet corn, it is used for feeding livestock, making
corn syrup, and producing industrial products. Popcorn kernels are
another popular corn type-- popping up in theaters and homes everywhere.
I do apologize for the delay in posting. We have been busy busy busy here at Southern Garden Tools.
Our phone rings a lot with questions this time... and we encourage phone calls! If you have a question-- don't hesitate to call us! We want to provide you with information that can aid you in making the best decision for ordering! To help provide additional information... I thought I would address some of our most common questions here. But always, do not hesitate to ring us and ask away! That's what we are here for-- expert advice!

1-- Which Nut Wizard do I need?

That one is easy. Check out this chart and see where your nut falls. If you are still undecided, let us know and we can help you determine. Keep in mind that the large Nut Wizard has a handle that is different than the other four models. So you can use the same handle on, say, the mini and medium. But you can't use the same handle for the small and large. We sell a retractable handle that is usable for the mini and ex-small.

2-- What is the purpose of the "dumper" or "unloader" for the Nut Wizard?

The double "arms of the Nut Wizard dumper fits onto a 5 gallon bucket. Once affixed, place the Nut Wizard basket on the dumper so that the dumper is extended into the basket of the Nut Wizard. Lightly twist the handle so that the dumper opens the wires of the basket. This should allow the nuts to dump into the bucket. See the below picture for a demonstration.

3-- Which is your best nutcracker?

What a loaded question! Truly, we only sell quality nutcrackers so rest assured in your purchase. To decide which nutcracker is best for you is to know your needs. We have price points starting at $19.95 and range up to nearly $5000. Ask yourself: is this for home use or for business? What is my budget? What nuts am I primarily trying to crack? Will I ever need to use this cracker for other nuts? If so, what type?

If you are seeking a cracker for pecans, check out Duke Nutcracker, Get Crackin', Steel Nutcracker II, Inertia Rubberband Cracker, Dynamic Electric Cracker, Kinetic Electric Pecan Cracker or one of our industrial crackers made by Pearce Brothers. We have them in capacities of 35lbs, 50lbs, 100lbs, or 200lbs. We also carry a pecan cleaner.

Keep in mind that our farm crackers do more than just pecans. They also are great for peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts and English walnuts.

A week or two of quiet before the phones start lighting up as people realize that nut season is approaching.. or arrived. Nut season is very busy here and for good reason-- we literally stock some great nut products. If you need a nut picked up, we have a solution for you. We sell everything from $21.95 Griffith Pecan Gatherers (these are great for those who like to take a walk and collect pecans or go out by the backyard pecan tree with the kiddos) up to the heavy duty 36" double wheel, double basket Bag-A-Nut Nut Picker Uppers. These hook up to your mower/ATV and roll behind you as you drive along comfortably.

These aren't just for pecans-- we have them for black walnuts, acorns, filberts/hazelnuts, almonds, chestnuts, English walnuts, hickory nuts, macadamias-- and even sweet gum balls (aren't they annoying), golf balls and pine cones! They will run you about $750 and that includes shipping. But truly-- you will make that money up in extra harvested nuts! It picks up nuts you can't even see. Trust me that we have plenty of products between the $21 and the $750. Just check us out and let me know if you have any questions.

What good would it be to have a whole bunch of nuts but no way to crack them? We have that too! We have the basic hand crackers that you place a nut in and squeeze... all the way up to electric crackers. If you've ever tried to crack a black walnut... then you know it can be next to impossible. Not with our Drill cracker! And have 10 tons of pecans but don't relish the thought of cracking them? Our Kinetic Kracker can do 1,560 pecans per hour. So those 10 tons... they don't look so laborious anymore.
We are nuts about nuts and this season is personally my favorite. Fall is the best! Pumpkins and nuts and leaves and cooler weather-- count me in! So we can handle this calm before the storm. But nut season draw near, my friends, and let us help you be ready for it! Southern Garden Toolshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01982151920172945957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4020869927199391131.post-7878538775774943902016-08-12T10:32:00.003-05:002016-08-12T10:57:09.518-05:00I must confess...that I view this blog as a chore-- a neglected chore for certain. Amongst the many, many tasks I have as 1/3 of the manpower here at Southern Garden Tools, paying attention to this blog isn't something I often do. However, I would like to change a lot of things about this blog and make it less "articles" and more a chronicle of what we do here. Besides having top-notch products like pea and bean shellers, nutcrackers, nut picker uppers, vertical gardening systems and more-- we are a thriving e-commerce business with quite a bit of humor and gaffes on a daily basis. Personally, I'd rather write a blog about what's going on in our trials and tribulations as an internet company and what we offer that no one else can than write articles that I'm not sure anyone is reading.

In any case, please watch the change of direction on our blog and tell me what you think.
In case you are new to this blog, to us or just need a refresher, I'd like to tell you a little about who we are. We are Southern Garden Tools.

Ha-- Ok, more about us. We are mainly an e-commerce business that sells a wide variety of home harvest automation products. We sell on a variety of marketplaces (that means places like Amazon, Ebay) under the name 855Sheller. We also sell on our websites. Now, are you ready for them? Because we have quite a lot. Here goes: Lawn Gardening Tools, Garden Harvesters, Black Walnut Cracker, Bama Bots, PeaSheller.Net, 855Sheller, Vertical Gardening Systems and PoBoy Pea Sheller.
A question I usually field at this time.. WHY so many sites? Well-- we want YOU to find US. We don't care which site you frequent. We just want you to be able to search on Google or your search engine of choice and locate us. Each site has a different focus but every site comes with superior customer service, expert advice and no hassle returns. We really pride ourselves in our relationships we establish with customers.

Few more things-- I know this post is getting long. WHO are we? Our master and commander is Kerry (I'll try to add pictures soon). He is the owner and sometimes, I let him be the boss as well. He started our humble company in the back of his home and now we've grown to two large warehouses. We appreciate his vision. He brings loads of creative ideas and crude humor.

Then, there is me. My name is Amy and I am the office manager. Mind you, I was hired as a Content Writer. But I promoted myself to Office Manager as it is more in line with what I do. If you call our line-- 855-743-5537 (which is 855-Sheller by the way), you are most likely going to reach me or Kerry. I do loads of customer service related tasks-- emails, calls, etc. I manage social media, blogs, marketplaces including listing new items, price monitoring... I handle wholesale sales (something new we are working on)... really, I do quite a lot. Tell Kerry that.

The other pie piece in this business is Corey. Corey is our shipper. He ensures that AFTER your order... your item is properly packaged and shipped to the correct address. We ship via USPS, FedEx and UPS so his task can be quite arduous.

We have our "main products" here at Southern Garden Tools-- pea/bean shellers, corn creamers and cutters, nutcrackers and nut picker uppers, and various vertical gardening systems. But we are expanding our product line so that we can offer a full array of products for automating your home harvest. We recently began offering fruit and wine presses (with and without grinders). I absolutely love our line of Happy Valley Ranch presses. They are HIGH-quality products that utilize the same pressing techniques from yesteryear. We also offer an array of grain mills from your basic hand-cranked to your Country Living Grain Mills with a full line of accessories to compliment. We have other products too so be sure to visit our websites to learn more.
If you know of a product you think we should carry, then let us know. Email me at amy@egarden.com and we will take a look at it!
I hope you like the new direction of the blog.
